Opening a Salon: The Emotional Journey
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of opening a salon. It’s a whirlwind of intense emotions—joy, stress, pride, and exhaustion—all wrapped into one surreal moment. You're managing people, navigating build-outs, serving clients, and juggling a million behind-the-scenes decisions. Even simple things like eating lunch without checking your phone feel like luxuries. And yet, we still do it. For the vision, for the love of the craft, and for the chance to create something meaningful for both clients and team members. As a former salon manager, I know that feeling all too well.
Designed with Intention: Inside the FLORE Experience
This time, I got to experience it from a different perspective—as a friend and guest—at the opening of FLORE Los Angeles, the stunning new salon from my longtime friend and former colleague, Nicolas Flores. Nicolas and I started our careers together at Sally Hershberger LA, and even then, it was clear he had created something special. Over the years, he’s become a go-to stylist for trendsetters and tastemakers alike, with a loyal client roster that includes Tania Sarin, Kelly Wearstler, and Simi & Haze. Known for his effortless, lived-in style and calm, grounding presence, Nicolas brings both artistry and authenticity to every appointment. Now, with the launch of FLORE, he’s created a space that fully reflects his aesthetic and energy.
From the moment I walked in, it was clear: FLORE isn’t just a beautiful salon—it’s an experience. Every element, from the layout to the lighting, felt thoughtful and intentional. The space strikes that rare balance of feeling both elevated and grounded. Chic, but never cold. It was the kind of place that makes you want to stay a while.
Meet the Artists Behind FLORE Los Angeles
The energy that night? Impeccable. The room buzzed with joy, warmth, and genuine connection. Guests included beauty industry pros, longtime clients, family, and friends all there to celebrate a milestone that had been years in the making. The music set the perfect tone, and don’t get me started on the florals and food—both were next-level, down to the FLORE logos delicately etched into the details.
But what made the night truly memorable was the team. Every staff member I met was kind, enthusiastic, and clearly proud to be part of something special. It wasn’t just about launching a brand—it was about creating a culture. And it showed in every conversation, every smile, every vibe.
Some of the standout artists you’ll find at FLORE include:
Jess Gonzalez – Celebrity colorist AKA JesstheeBestt, my longtime friend, and an absolute force when it comes to personalized color. Jess brings a signature glow to everything she touches. You can get a glimpse of her process and passion in her Behind the Look feature.
Holland Hager – Known for her effortless, gorgeous blondes and a former colleague from our days at SHLA. Holland has that rare ability to make her clients feel instantly at ease while delivering work that turns heads every time.
Leanne Citrone – An LA hair icon with decades of expertise and an innate sense of style. Leanne’s presence at FLORE is a testament to the caliber of the team Nicolas has built—she’s a true legend in the industry, and her work continues to set the bar.
Elevating the Client Experience—In and Out of the Chair
What also struck me is how FLORE is designed not just for style but for the full client experience. The ambiance sets the tone the moment you walk in. Everything from lighting and seating to the flow of the space makes it feel comfortable and luxe. FLORE is clearly invested in every touchpoint of the experience so it’s no surprise that they would choose Boulevard as their client experience platform. And that’s what truly makes a salon unforgettable. It’s not just what happens in the chair—it’s how you're made to feel before, during, and even after your visit.
Being there that night, watching Nicolas in his element, I felt nothing but pride. I’ve watched him grow from a passionate stylist into a visionary salon owner who leads with creativity and heart. FLORE is more than just a new chapter—it’s a love letter to the LA beauty community.
Walking out that night, I felt inspired. FLORE is proof of what’s possible when you build something with intention and integrity. If you’re in Los Angeles and looking for a salon that blends design with incredible client experience, make your way to FLORE in West Hollywood. It’s the kind of place that reminds you why you fell in love with beauty in the first place.
